Manipulation of sounds is the last skill in the hierarchy of phonemic awareness proficiency. It involves children substituting, omitting and deleting sounds in words to create new words.

"Say bug, now change /b/ to /t/. What word do you have? (tug)

“Say cap, now change /p/ to /t/. What word do you have?” (cat)

“Say smile without /s/, what’s the new word?” (mile)

Use familiar songs and change the beginning sounds of some words. “The Wheels on the Bus” The Beels on the Whus go round and round Round and round Round and round The Beels on the Whus go round and round All through the town. The Born on the Hus goes beep, beep, beep… The Biver on the Drus goes move on back…
